Christian Sr. Col. War of 1812, 3rd. U.S. Infantry, defender
of Mobile. Russell, on orders from General Andrew Jackson,
executed six Tennessee militiamen who had been charged as deserters
because
these men who had been mustered for three months had insisted
that they should be allowed to return home when the period
of their
enlistment
ended. Col. Russell's "most prominent legacy
today was as a civilian brick contractor: the construction of
Fort Morgan (see Fort Bowyer), and Mobile harbor under his Malone
family kinsman, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Maj. Cornelilius
Augustus Ogden." Russell was born in Abingdon VA on the 18th.
of May, 1782 and died at Mobile 23 Jan 1861. He is buried in
Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile across from the "Confederate Rest." His
grave has been marked with a VA marker by James A. Miller Jr.
and other family members. Russell was married in 1815 on
Hollinger Island, Mobile to Margaret Hollinger.For more info. mailto:
